atrify GDSN user group – March 2023 position paper
>Medical device manufacturers encourage EDI solution providers to increase the efficiency of EDI by leveraging the GDSN, which is the GS1 standard process to exchange product information used worldwide. GDSN will substantially increase data quality compared to the current process based on individual processes such as Excel spreadsheets. GDSN is a robust and proven process which has been in existence for 20 years, driving at ensuring that recipients, such as EDI providers, receive high quality, consistent data directly from the manufacturers. Many Data recipients such as Hospitals or Group purchasing organizations across the globe have successfully implemented the GDSN, which currently
holds over 5 million of medical devices and pharmaceutical products worldwide, and new Recipients are getting on-boarded regularly. The atrify community is willing to cooperate with the EDI Providers to ensure a smooth implementation of the GDSN by them.
1) Benefits for EDI solution providers:
- DATA MANAGEMENT EFFICIENCY:
-
- Smoother EDI process and therefore, more efficient Supply chain processes (orders, invoices, ASNs…) through higher quality level of data shared with the EDI providers. Expanding set of accurate electronic product attribute for EDI message processing support and Portal presentation. Adhering to industry (no localizations and customizing.
- COST REDUCTION:
- Suppress administrative work created by the poor quality of data received through proprietary processes (e.g. chasing manufacturers for corrections/completions of missing data)
- Impact of data quality on the EDI transactions.
- Sharing same, unmodified attribute data along the process chain (roaming use)
2) Corresponding Benefits for manufacturers:
- COST REDUCTION and DATA MANAGEMENT EFFICIENCY:
- Smoother EDI processes
- Suppress manual work having no added value (filling-in proprietary Excel spreadsheets of the EDI provider, on a regular or ad-hoc basis, with master data already ready to be available and shared by the manufacturers in the GDSN)
- Increase data quality, ensure consistency of data shared by manufacturers
- Support customer processes, receive better order data from customers
3) Ultimately improving Patient safety
- Less time spent on maintenance of product data
- improved ordering process and warehouse management reducing shortages
- making the right product available when and where needed (“received what was intended to order”)
4) Process:
- EDI providers to confirm with the manufacturers which GDSN data they need to receive (data model analysis)
- EDI providers to subscribe to a GDSN licence to access the network and be able to receive product information from all the GDSN enabled manufacturers for their countries of activity
- Manufacturers to start publishing those data to the EDI Providers
